Tia-Clair Toomey squashed any doubt as to who is the dominant force at the top of women’s CrossFit by out-pointing the in-form Sara Sigmundsdottir at the Wodapalaza CrossFit Festival in Miami.

Sigmundsdottir looked imperious when taking the Open and the Dubai Championship titles earlier this season, leading to doubts as to who is top dog in the division.

The pair finally appeared in the same field over the weekend and, after taking a lead on Saturday, Toomey showed her class in the closing stages of the competition to clinch the win.

She held a 16-point lead going into the penultimate event named “Down-Up” which she won, comfortably moving ahead of the field, to give her a comfortable lead with one workout remaining.

Due to so many athleten already having booked tickets to Madison, the Games invite filtered down all the way to 10th place as Canadian Emily Rolfe narrowly edged out Colleen Fotsch by just four points.

The high-quality men’s field was won by Open champion Patrick Vellner, who defended his title in dramatic style.

For the first time in history, a Sanctional was decided by a tie-break after the top two athleten finished on exactly the same points.

American Cole Sager equalled Vellner’s tally of 714, but failed to win any events, meaning the Canadian topped the podium thanks to his three workout victories.

Although Sager went into the final day with a comprehensive 64-point lead, the last two events played to his opponent’s strengths and Vellner showed no nerves as he claimed first place in both.

Saxon Panchik secured his third-straight Madison appearance by earning the invite in fourth place.

The team division was won - rather predictably - by Mayhem Freedom, but they were pushed all the way by Team GOWOD.

In stark contrast to the one-sided affair at the 2019 Games, Rich Froning’s outfit had only a two-point lead on Saturday night.

They would secure victory by picking up the win in the “Down-Up” and then showing good composure in the final workout to maintain their lead, though.
