Master Eating Out This Christmas: Tips to Stay on Track Without Missing the Fun

This time of year, it’s extremely common for people to surrender to the social pressures of Christmas, the foods, and the alcohol.

What if we told you that with a little bit of strategy and a few mindset shifts, you’ll feel in control and confident this December?

Here’s how:

Before the Meal:

Get Eyes on The Menu

A study published in the Journal of Consumer Research found that people are 2-3 times more likely to make healthier meal decisions when they review the menu before arriving at the restaurant, compared to those who decide impulsively at the table.

When you plan ahead:

  • You’re less influenced by hunger or social pressure.
  • You have more time to weigh options rationally rather than emotionally.
  • It reduces decision fatigue.

Build a Buffer

Opt for lighter meals throughout the day, or even a period of fasting, to save on calories and allow yourself to enjoy a more indulgent meal.

Start Smart

Choose a lighter starter like a broth-based soup or a side salad to fill up without overloading on calories.

Hack Your Main Course

  • Ask for dressings and sauces on the side.
  • Order a large salad on the side and eat this before your main dish. The volume will help fill you up.
  • Prioritise protein and vegetables, and enjoy carbs in moderation.

Pace Yourself

Eat slowly and stay mindful throughout the meal. Avoid watching TV or scrolling on your phone. This helps you enjoy the flavors and gives your body time to signal when it’s full.

Mindset Shifts:

Reframe the Experience

Decide whether you are eating for enjoyment or fuel.

  • For special occasions with family or close friends, focus on savoring the moment.
  • For formal events or meals you’re less excited about, frame it as “eating for fuel,” making it a practical objective.

Indulgence is Fine

“Healthy eating is a ratio, not a single event.”

Enjoying a festive treat isn’t “bad.” Balance is key. One indulgent meal won’t derail your progress, just like one healthy meal doesn’t create it.

Win the Next Choice

If you overindulge, let it go. The next meal or day is a fresh opportunity to re-align. Staying on track this Christmas isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency.

Bonus Tips:

  • Stay Hydrated: Thirst is often mistaken for hunger.
  • Share Dessert: Enjoy a taste without going overboard.
  • Smart Alcohol Choices: Opt for white spirits with 0-calorie mixers, or alternate each drink with water.

You don’t have to choose between your fitness goals and the joy of Christmas foods. By planning ahead and being mindful, you can fully enjoy the season without losing all momentum.
