Chris Weist, 25, has set an unofficial world record by deadlifting 428kg in the 140kg weight division.

Competitions in powerlifting are few and far between at present but the American took advantage of the Northeast Power Bowl in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

He weighed in right on the 140kg limit and only attempted the final of the three lifts to give himself the best chance at the deadlift record.

That strategy paid off as he attacked the lift with aggression and successfully pulled the weight to achieve his biggest deadlift to date in competition.

His effort certainly stood out in the results table as his nearest competitor managed 265kg, a healthy 163kg less.

It also eclipsed the previous record, set by the legendary Latvian lifter Konstantin Konstantinov 11 years ago, by nearly 10kg.

Weist’s lift still won’t go in the official record books, though, due to the event not being an international meet.

That didn’t stop the promising young lifter from enjoying the moment though. He posted to Instagram afterwards: “So unreal of a moment in my Powerlifting journey I'll never forget. Truly blessed to have the capability of competing with the best in the world, never take strength for granted, some would give all to be where you stand.”
